Writing Dialogue That Films Well

Every Film, Television Series, Animated Short, or idea starts with a script. You may not know it but that idea of yours burning a hole in your brain waiting to be let out as a film, is your script. Even though it has not yet been written on paper. However, a rough idea or script is one thing and having it film well for AI is a completely different matter.

Writing your dialogue for AI video generation

An excellently written script must take into consideration three key steps:

Pacing your dialogue ensures the character speaking it understands its nuances, the pauses, hesitation in its voice, fear, anger or any other emotion. Compare writing a run on sentence in a single line:

“Oh, hey — look, I know I said I’d cover it, but after everything I really don’t think I can, so don’t make this weird.”

Now see what spacing this sentence out in chunks could do:

“Hey.”
“Look. I know I said I’d cover it.”
“I can’t. Not after everything.”
“Don’t make this weird.”

Accurate spacing and breaking long sentences into smaller chunks could be the difference between clarity and mumbled words.

Character actions

Account for the body movement and actions of the main characters in a scene. The speaker's speech and action should be directed to a receiving cast member where appropriate. Except when a character is narrating a story, attributing actions ensure your characters speak to themselves not the void.

The listening character can also be given some action so it does not stand there like a paper cut. Note that almost every AI video generation platform you use, is capable of rendering the actions and dialogue attributed to your character. So, use them.

Dialogue rhythm

Some creators want characters to sing hymns or football chants, others want a whistling character, and everyone wants characters to speak according to their ethnicity and background. Achieving this starts with defining your characters' background and speaking patterns properly.

Speaking patterns refer to accents, lisps, voice tone, and any other characteristics that define how we speak. A clearly defined speaking pattern gives the AI video generation engine something to work with.
